Frida Kahlo is one of the best-known Mexican painters. She is especially well known for her self-portraits. She was a strong believer in promoting and supporting native Mexican culture, and wore traditional Mexican dresses with her hair up to look as traditionally Mexican as possible.

Frida was very influenced by Mexican culture and folk art styles. She often mixed realism with fantasy and used bright and colorful flowers as well as animals in her paintings.

Directions:

  1. Study these two self-portraits of Frida Kahlo with your kids.
  2. Discuss the painting with them. Point out how the artist uses bright colors, and includes flowers and animals. Notice her hair, her clothes, and the way she looks directly at you.
  3. Using the painting as a model, encourage your kids to create their own self-portrait. They can include the elements they like best from Frida, but the rest of it is theirs to create. Join the fun and make one of your own!
